Free Tai Chi
Free Tai Chi Chuan every Saturdayat UPCOB located at 4413 Tuckerman St. in University Park, MD.Sponsored by UPCOB (University Park Church of the Brethren), Dancing In Silence, Inc. has been offering free Tai Chi Chuan classes to the general public since 2008. Students learn the five Organ and Spirit Enlivening Qi Gong exercises as well as Lao(Old) Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan. Classes are held at the church from 8-9am. Everyone is welcome. The only requirement is that you wear comfortable clothing and flat comfortable shoes.
World Tai Chi Day
Celebrate World Tai Chi & QiGong DayEvery year Dancing In Silence,Inc. invites the community to celebrate with people from over 65 nations in hundreds of cities and all 50 US states, to wrap the world in a global Tai Chi & QiGong movemnt. Whether you are experienced or a novice, everyone is invited to join us in this annual health and healing event. World Tai Chi & Qi Gong Day is always held on the last Saturday in April at 10 am. Dancing In Silence, Inc. at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. Assigned to the post trial male consumers, Fundi Janet volunteers and has taught martial arts at St. Elizabeth's since summer of 2008. The first class consisted of six men. These men learned Lao Yang Qi Gong exercises and the first section of Lao Yang. The men became so proficient that they performed at the 3rd Annual Anniversary Celebration of the Forensic Council in November 2009 to rousing applause from the audience. The men also performed at the Black History Celebration in 2010. There are thirteen men participating in the 2010 program, three of whom were members of the first year Tai Chi Chuan program. Dancing In Silence, Inc. is enthusiastic about the consumer feedback and is hoping to establish a funded program at St. Elizabeth's
Xiong Ying Visits
Xiong Ying, visiting professor and fellow Tai Chi player from China, was a guest tai chi teacher during a Saturday class this spring (of 2010). Fellow Saturday class tai chi players as well as curious members of the community came out to experience the calisthinics and the 24 movement short form Xiong Ying plays.Its times like these that you experience the true power of Tai Chi Chuan in terms of bringing people of the world closer together. The visit from Xiong Ying was simply marvelous.Xiong Ying won a gold medal in Tai Chi at the China Handan 11th International Tai Chi Sports Meeting (in 2008). Xiong Ying also won gold and silver medals in Tai Chi sword at the Guangxi Fok Wushu competition (2009).
Local Fairs
Dancing in Silence, Inc. volunteers at Local Festivals throughout the year. At the Wellness Fair sponsored by UPCOB in University Park, MD, Fundi Janet taught QiGong exercises and gave twenty minute reflexology treatments to guests thoughout the day. At the St. Paul's Episicopal Church Annual Arts & Strawberry Festival, Fundi Janet and Sr. Student Art Donn performed QiGong Exercises and Tai Chi Chuan throughout the day with audience participation.Dancing In Silence, Inc. was also invited to the Annual Chinese Culture Festival in Washington, DC (October 3, 2010). First year students demonstrated the 1st section of Lao Yang Tai Chi Chuan in front of the US capitol. This was their very first public performance!Particpating in activities like these are one of the fun ways of introducing the virtues of QiGong and Tai Chi Chuan to the community
